Phil Jagielka came to Everton's rescue minutes later, the defender pulled off a last ditch clearance, to deny Dwight Gale a certain goal.
Palace went close again in the 37th minute, as Jason Puncheon's stinging effort from distance force Joel Robles into a fine save.
The fans at Selhurst Park had to wait until the 70th minute some goal-mouth action once again, as Lukaku failed to get on the end of Aidan McGeady's inviting cross.
Julian Speroni came to Palace's rescue in the 86th minute, pulling off a fine save to keep out McGeady's curling effort from distance.
Everton pushed on for a second goal in the closing stages of the half, with Lukaku firing into the side-netting from close.
Roberto Martinez's side managed to hold on and claim the win, which is their first league win in eight games.
