The Red Devils revealed Marcus Rashford's new squad number ahead of their friendly against Bayern Munich on Sunday via their official Twitter account.
Manager Jose Mourinho gave some insight into why he decided to give the 20-year-old such a significant number, which has been worn by some big personalities.
"He wanted it. He always wanted it," the Portuguese tactician said, as quoted by BBC Sport.
"Of course, he respected the big Rooney and then Zlatan wanted to have it.
"He was in the shadow, waiting for the opportunity and now the shirt is empty. It is something fantastic for the kid, let's give the shirt to him."
Former Sweden international Ibrahimovic was the last player to wear the jersey before the young Englishman, and did so for only one season. The 36-year-old scored 29 goals in 53 appearances for the Red Devils, a playing spell that was effectively ended by a horrific knee injury.
The most famous No. 10 to have played for the Manchester club is arguably former Three Lions captain Wayne Rooney. The 32-year-old spent 13 years at Old Trafford, becoming the club's all-time leading goalscorer along the way, having scored 253 goals in 559 appearances.
Others who have worn the famous jersey, according to Transfermarkt, include Ruud van Nistelrooy, Teddy Sheringham, David Beckham, Mark Hughes, Clayton Blackmore, Lou Macari and Norman Whiteside.
