Liverpool leapfrogged Manchester City into third spot in the Premier League, after recording a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
The Reds nearly broke the deadlock in the in the 14th minute but Roberto Firmino dragged his effort wide with only Ben Foster to beat.
The home side missed a good chance to take the lead in the 24th minute when Nacer Chadli failed to connect with Philips cross in the six-yards out.
Philips then squandered a chance for West Brom in the 35th minute, as he failed to trouble Simon Mignolet from close range, after being played in by Hal Ronson-Kanu.
The Red eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime as Firmino fired home from eight-yards out after getting on the end of Lucas Leiva's flick.
The visitors should have doubled their lead in the 57th minute when Firmino picked out an un-marked James Milner, who volleyed over from close range.
Tony Pulis introduced Salomon Rondon and James McClean after the hour, as they pushed for an equalsing goal.
West Brom should have been level after 80 minutes when Rondon played in Philips, who fired straight at Simon Mignolet.
Nonetheless, Jurgen Klopp's managed to see out the closing stages to secure three points, as they keep their Champions League hopes alive.
