Man Utd Scrape Past Watford In Six-Goal Thriller
English Premier League
Result: Watford 2-4 Manchester United
Venue: Vicarage Road
Date: 28 November 2017
Manchester United beat Watford 4-2 at Vicarage Road in a thrilling Tuesday night Premier League clash that saw Ashley Young score twice against his former club.
Marcos Rojo started for the Red Devils, while at the other end, Jesse Lingard was given a rare spot in the XI.
Watford looked promising going forward in the opening stages, clearly not content to sit back and let United do all the attacking.
However, José Mourinho's side drew first blood in the 19th minute as Young rifled his half-volley into the bottom corner from just outside the box.
Six minutes later, Young struck again. The visitors earned a free-kick for Abdoulaye Doucouré's cynical pull-back on Paul Pogba and the versatile England international dispatched it into the top corner.
Anthony Martial then made it 3-0 in the 31st minute, calmly slotting the ball under Heurelho Gomes after having been set up by Romelu Lukaku.
Both teams went close just before half-time. First, Gomes made a superb double-save to deny Romelu Lukaku and then Lingard. Soon afterwards, Richarlison's header rattled the crossbar. Ultimately, neither side found a late goal ahead of the break.
The Hornets showed attacking intent again at the start of the second half, but the resolute Red Devils defence held firm in the opening stages.
Just as United looked as if they were taking control of the game again, Watford were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute for Marcos Rojo's challenge from behind on Roberto Pereyra.
Replays showed Rojo might have got some of the ball, but either way, Deeney stepped up and scored.
That goal sprung Watford into life and they pulled another back in the 84th minute as Doucouré steered the ball into the net with the outside of his foot after receiving it in the danger area from André Carrillo.
However, the Red Devils had the last laugh just two minutes later. A magnificent solo goal from Lingard — who shook off Adrian Mariappa and Christian Kabasele before scoring — all but sealed United's win.
