Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Club-record signing Jack Grealish was issued his debut by City, who named Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva on the bench as Spurs missed want-away forward Harry Kane.

Spurs were nearly behind four minutes in from a smart header in the area by Fernandinho following a corner-kick and a snap-shot from close-range by Joao Cancelo.

The champions didn’t have it all their way and instead could’ve trailed midway in the first half courtesy of a first-time strike by Lucas Moura, but a goal-line clearance materialised.

Algerian international Riyad Mahrez should’ve had City ahead with a half-volley in the area ten minutes towards the break, but he directed Raheem Sterling’s delivery way-wide.

Spurs entered the second half positively and claimed the lead inside ten minutes after Heung Min-Son cut inside from a quick breakaway before nestling the bottom-corner from outside the area.

The big-spending Citizens continued to remain on the ropes and should’ve trailed again minutes later from a clear opening on the near side by Steven Bergwijn, but the Dutchman dragged wide.

That then led to a substitution before the last 20 minutes by City, as Sterling vacated and Gabriel Jesus entered soon after Ferran Torres fluffed a decent delivery from a free-kick.

Spurs’s deep-sitting play almost fell apart in the closing stages after a curling strike from substitute De Bruyne had goalkeeper Hugo Lloris at full stretch.

In the end, the LilyWhites held on to claim an opening day with a win under new manager Nuno Esporito Santo.
