Fabregas Keeps Chelsea's Top Four Hopes Alive
English Premier League Report: Swansea City v Chelsea 28 April 2018
English Premier League
Result: Swansea City 0-1 Chelsea
Date: 28 April 2018
Venue: Liberty Stadium
Chelsea kept their top-four bid alive as Cesc Fabregas' first-half strike secured a 1-0 Premier League win over Swansea City at a rain-soaked Liberty Stadium.
The Blues snatched the lead as early as the fourth minute as Fabregas unleashed an impressive left-footed finish following a through ball from Eden Hazard, 0-1.
The Swans lacked any sort of rhythm in their play and made it easy for Antonio Conte’s charges to pass the ball around.
Swansea defender Alfie Mawson nearly netted an own goal in the 22nd minute after his attempted clearance came off the woodwork.
Conte’s charges were spending far less time on the ball after 35 minutes but the Swans posed little threat in going forward.
That proved to be the trend for the rest of the first half as the Blues took a one-goal lead into the break.
The rain continued pouring in the second stanza, making for a scrappy and sloppy encounter.
Carlos Carvalhal was looking for some pace up front and he introduced Nathan Dyer on the hour mark in place of Andy King.
The Blues were in the ascendancy, although the Swans did look lively with the Ayew brothers, Jordan and Andre, causing problems in the final third.
Victor Moses almost got the second goal for the visitors 10 minutes before full-time by attempting to divert Fabregas’ cross at the near post but his effort missed by inches.
The Swans went close to bagging an equaliser in the closing stages, with Tom Carroll firing a low strike inches wide of the upright, but Chelsea held on for the win.
