English Premier League
Result: Southampton 0-9 Leicester City
Date: 25 October 2019
Venue: St Mary’s Stadium
Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy both netted hat-tricks as Leicester City moved up to second spot in the Premier League after humiliating Southampton 9-0 at St Mary's.
No changes showed from the Foxes, while Southampton went for two changes in Nathan Redmond and Maya Yoshida.
Ben Chilwell gave Leicester a dream start in the first 10 minutes when he made use of a through ball to finish off a rebound from Angus Gunn, who parried a shot from Ashley Barnes.
The home side fortunes turned for the worse two minutes later after Bertrand saw red following a poor challenge, with the Video Assistant Referee rubberstamping the decision.
The Foxes went further ahead five minutes later when Tielemans took a fine touch of Yan Valery’s knock down to beat Gunn with a neat finish into the bottom corner.
Leicester made good work of the numerical advantage on 19 minutes as Tielemans turned provider to Ayoze Perez, whose first time effort proved too strong for Gunn.
Perez grabbed a second in the 39th minute when he went around the defence to slot home Chilwell’s cross from a tight angle in the area.
Jamie Vardy made it five in added time when the England international turned from his marker to fire beyond the reach of Gunn.
The Foxes didn’t let up in the second half despite the defensive and offensive reinforcements from Ralph Hasenhuttl, who brought in Kevin Danso and Jack Stephens.
Southampton's miserable evening upped 57 minutes in when Perez completed his hat-trick after bringing down Barnes’s chip to finish past Gunn.
Chilwell brushed off a challenge from Jan Bednarek a minute later to launch a pin-point cross for Vardy, who accepted with a free header past Gunn from an unmarked position in the area.
The Saints still had a bit of fight left, as Redmond carried a through ball from Stephens through the area to line up a curling effort which Schmeichel pushed over the top in the last 20 minutes.
James Maddison contributed to an already fine evening, after curling home a close range free-kick into the top corner five minutes to the end, before Vardy capped off the evening right at the death with a thumping penalty after he went down in the area, taking the Foxes second albeit temporarily with a hat-trick.
