Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino played a starring roles as Liverpool registered a 2-0 win over Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on Sunday evening.
Firmino opened the scoring for the Reds in the sixth minute with a composed first time finish after being teed up by Salah.
In the 14th minute, Reds goalkeeper Loris Karius did well to deny Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's curling strike from just inside the box.
Guido Carrillo went close to finding the equaliser in the 23rd minute after peeling away from his marker at the box following a corner but his header could not find the target.
Sadio Mane nearly punished the Saints five minutes before time but he pushed his effort wide after doing well to get past two players.
Salah and Firmino combined again to cut open the hosts’ defence three minutes before the break for the second goal, with the Egyptian finding the back of the net following the Brazilian's fine flick.
After a quiet start to the second stanza, Ward-Prowse carved out a chance on the hour-mark to pull a goal back but he could not find the target with his curling strike inside the box.
Mane could have extended the lead in the 72nd minute after bursting through into the box but his low shot was turned away by Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
The home side were started to run out of ideas with five minutes left on the clock, playing hopeless long balls into the area, which the Reds defence had no problem dealing with.
That proved to be the trend for the rest of half as Jurgen Klopp's ran out convincing winners on the day.
