Result: Newcastle United 1-2 Arsenal
Date: 15 September 2018
Venue: St Jame's Park
Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil were among the goals as Arsenal recorded a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at St Jame's Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners came into the encounter having secured back-to-back league victories over West Ham United and Cardiff City.
However, it was the Magpies who enjoyed the better start to the encounter, as they managed to carve out a couple chances in the opening 20 minutes, with Lascelles going closest with a header.
The Gunners managed to carve out a change after 26 minutes as Alexandre Lacazette pounced on a loose ball, skipped past two defenders before firing into the side-netting.
Both sides struggled to carve out chances for the remainder of the half as they went into the break goalless.
The Gunners eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the break, with Granit Xhaka finding the back of the net with a stunning free-kick.
Four minutes later, Mesut Ozil doubled the Gunners' lead with a clinical finish from close range after some good work by Xhaka and Nacho Monreal.
The Magpies introduced Kenedy for Jacob Murphy in the 70th minute before Henrikh Mkhitaryan was introduced for the Gunners, replaced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Danny Welbeck nearly added a third for the visitors in the 85th minute as he failed to slot home at the far post after Lacazette's initial effort was blocked.
