English Premier League
Result: Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd
Date: 4 March 2015
Venue: St James' Park
Manchester United claimed three valuable points on the road as they edged out Newcastle 1-0 on Wednesday night.
The Magpies felt hard done by in the 10th minute as their penalty appeal was turned down. Riviere seemed to get a touch on the loose ball as he made his way into the area just before Smalling brought him down, but the referee waved away the protests. Replays suggested the Frenchman was indeed fouled by the United defender.
Man United squandered a good chance in the 26th minute when a phenomenal pass from Ashley Young fell for Wayne Rooney who had space to shoot, but his effort was sliced and went wide of the target.
Tim Krul showed his worth on the half-hour mark as he rushed off his goal-line to prevent Rooney from tapping home from close range after a low cross from Di Maria.
The Newcastle keeper pulled off another fine save in the 43rd minute. Antonio Valencia made his way down the right flank and crossed for Marouane Fellaini, but his headed shot from close range was kept out by Krul.
The Dutch keeper was at it again early in the second half as he kept out Young from close range yet again to keep the hosts in with a chance.
Newcastle had a top chance in the 68th minute when Perez got a counter-attack moving towards the Man United goal. He surged forward and played in Cisse, but his effort was not struck the way he would have liked and went inches wide of goal.
As the game looked set for a draw, the Red Devils sneaked in a late winner in the 89th minute to secure three points. Abeid won the ball for Newcastle but then played a poor back-pass that Krul sliced straight at Young who made no mistake as he tapped it home.
