Manchester United's hopes clinching a top four spot took another dent, after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Swansea City at Old Trafford.
United were dealt a blow after jusst nine minutes when Luke Shaw was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Antonio Valencia.
The hosts nearly went ahead after 17 minutes when Anthony Martial played in Jesse Lingard, whose strike was superbly saved by Lukasz Fabianski.
Jordan Ayew nearly handed Swansea the lead after 32 minutes but the Ghanaian's low strike was saved by David de Gea.
The Red Devils were awarded a penalty on the stroke of halftime when Fabianski was adjudged to have brought down Marcus Rashford. Rooney stepped up and converted the spot-kick, 1-0.
Jose Mourinho was dealt another injury blow after 59 minutes when Eric Bailly, the only fit central defender, was forced off. He was replaced by Matteo Darmian.
Swansea suffered a blow of their own in the 68th minute as Jefferson Montero was forced off with a hamstring injury just three minutes after his arrival.
The visitors eventually leveled matters in the 79th minute as Gylfi Sigurddson curled home a sublime free-kick.
Mourinho responded by introducing Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Rooney soon after the equaliser.
United pushed for a winning goal in the closing but they were unable to carve out a clear-cut chance and were forced to settle for a point.
