Result: Manchester United 2-0 Southampton
Date: 19 August 2016
Venue: Old Trafford
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored for the third successive game for Manchester United, as the Red Devils secured a 2-0 win over Southampton at Old Trafford.
Paul Pogba made his first start in a Red Devils shirt, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic retained his spot in the attack alongside Wayne Rooney.
Jose Mourinho's charges saw most of the ball in the opening exchanges with Pogba and Juan Mata looking lively in the middle of the park.
After a quiet spell in the half, United eventually broke the deadlock after 36 minutes when Ibrahimovic rose above Jose Fonte to tower home a header into the far corner.
The Saints looked lively on the break, with Nathan Redmond troubling the United defence with his pace on a few occasions.
United were awarded a penalty five minutes into the second half when Luke Shaw was brought down in the box. Ibrahimovic stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 2-0.
The home side continued to dominate and they should have extended their lead after the hour mark, however Anthony Martial failed to beat Fraser Forster in a one on one situation.
Mourinho introduced Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ander Herrera for the final quarter of the game, as the Red Devils saw out the rest of the game with relative ease.
The victory sees the Red Devils remain at the summit of the Premier League standings.
