Paul Pogba marked his return to action with a goal and an assist as Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.
United got the first chance of the game when Romelu Lukaku connected with a cross from Antonio Valencia but the forward’s effort sailed over the bar in the seventh minute.
Seven minutes later, Dwight Gayle stunned the home crowd as he put the visitors ahead with a clinical finish.
Constant pressure from Jose Mourinho’s men saw chances fall for Marcus Rashford but his efforts couldn’t find the target as Newcastle were living dangerously.
It took the Red Devils 37 minutes to get on the score-sheet as Anthony Martial headed home a teasing cross from Pogba to level the scores.
Chris Smalling powered home a Ashley Young cross to head Man United into the lead on the stroke of halftime.
Mourinho’s men started the second half the strongest and Pogba marked his return with a goal in the 55th minute after being set up by Rashford.
Lukaku was not to be left out of the scoring though as the forward finished emphatically to make it 4-1 to his side in the 70th minute.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was introduced in the 77th minute to a warm Old Trafford reception as he replaced Anthony Martial.
Ibrahimovic almost marked his return with a goal as his trademark acrobatic volley was brilliantly kept out by Rob Elliot in the 90th minute.
The Red Devils put in a dominant performance to earn a comfortable 4-1 victory.
