Martial's Solitary Strike Earns Man Utd Victory
Result: Manchester United 1-0 Everton
Date: 3 April 2016
Venue: Old Trafford
Manchester United ground out a 1-0 victory over Everton on Sunday to move within a single point of the Premier League top four.
Louis van Gaal's charges came close to opening the scoring in the 17th minute. Anthony Martial, who played out on the left, cut inside and unleashed a shot from 35 yards out that only just went wide of the far post.
At the other end of the pitch David de Gea was put to task when Chris Smalling slipped to give Romelu Lukaku possession. The Everton striker powered towards goal but De Gea reacted quickly to come off his line and clean up the danger.
The breakthrough arrived in the 54th minute. The attack was initiated by Fosu-Mensah who played a deft one-two with Rashford before crossing towards the far post where Martial was in position to beat Joel Robles with his strike.
The Toffees came within inches of responding a couple of minutes later. Leighton Baines whipped in a corner kick for Phil Jagielka who rattled the bar with a rocket header.
Everton looked set to draw level in the last five minutes when Seamus Coleman marauded down the right before squaring for Lukaku to tap in, but Antonio Valencia made a last-ditch block to save United at the death.
Elsewhere, league leaders Leicester City strengthened their position in the standings with a 1-0 victory over Southampton.
