Result: Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
Date: 16 April 2016
Venue: Old Trafford
Marcus Rashford inspired Manchester United to a slender 1-0 victory over struggling Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.
The match started on a promising note as both sides had opportunities within the opening ten minutes, Marcus Rojo pulling his header a bit too high following Jordan Ayew’s effort that also sailed over the bar.
The hosts began to gain some momentum as they started seeing more of the ball, and Marouane Fellaini came close to putting them ahead with a 16th minute header.
The Red Devils were finally rewarded for their attacking efforts when youngster Marcus Rashford stepped up in the 31st minute to slot the ball into the back of the net after getting on the end of Antonio Valencia's low cross.
Louis van Gaal’s charges continued to look good, but Villa managed to hold on and not concede another one until the break.
Rashford almost added to his tally almost straight after the restart as he had to watch his 47th minute effort go agonizingly wide.
The home side was created all the opportunities in the second stanza as Juan Mata’s 62nd minute strike was well saved in the visitors’ goals.
The visitors were struggling to find their way back into the clash as they continued to try and push for the equaliser.
United were proving a bit too strong though as Aston Villa were starved of shots at goal in the second half, although Rudy Gustede rattled the frame of the goal in the closing stages.
Louis Van Gaal's charges held on for the win and kept them slim European hopes alive.
