Pep Concedes Five For First Time In Man City Loss

English Premier League

Result: Manchester City 2-5 Leicester City

Date: 27 September 2020

Venue: Etihad Stadium

Manchester City had a day to forget after being hammered 5-2 by Leicester City, with Jamie Vardy bagging a hat-trick at the Etihad.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola made only two changes to the side that beat Wolverhampton Wanderers, as Eric Garcia replaced John Stones and Riyad Mahrez took the place of Gabriel Jesus upfront.

It took the Citizens only four minutes to open the scoring as Mahrez latched onto a rebound from a corner inside the box and hit a sweet right-footed strike into the top corner.

Leicester were defending too deep and they were nearly punished ten minutes before the break after Rodri powered home a free header from Kevin De Bruyne's free-kick but the goal was was disallowed for offside.

However, the Foxes were allowed back into the game two minutes later after Kyle Walker conceded a penalty by pulling back Vardy inside the box.

Vardy went up to take the spot-kick himself and fired an unstoppable strike into the top corner to level matters for Brendan Rodgers' charges and the sides went to the break level pegging.

Man City were playing a high line early in the second stanza and they paid the price for it, as Vardy gave Leicester a 2-1 lead eight minutes from the break with a cheeky back-heel at the near post after Timothy Castagne raced clear on the right wing and played a square pass.

Vardy made it 3-1 for the Foxes and completed his hat-trick four minutes later from the penalty spot, with a low strike into the bottom corner after he was brought down by Garcia inside the box.

Second-half substitute James Maddison put the game to bed for Rodgers' men in the last 13 minutes as he made it 4-1 with a delightful curling strike from the edge of the box into the top corner.

Nathan Ake pulled a goal back for the Citizens in the last six minutes with a bullet header from a corner by Mahrez but the hosts shot themselves in the foot after Benjamin Mendy conceded a penalty in the last two minutes by pulling down Maddison inside the box.

Youri Tielemans stepped up to take the spot-kick after Vardy was taken off a few minutes before and fired an unstoppable strike beyond the reach of Ederson and Leicester clinched an emphatic 5-2 win to go top of the log with a perfect record.
