English Premier League
Result: Manchester City 2-1 Norwich City
Date: 31 October 2015
Venue: Etihad Stadium
A late Yaya Toure penalty handed Manchester City a slender 2-1 win over an inspired Norwich City outfit at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts were off to a flyer, putting together some lovely passing moves before Wilfried Bony had a fine 9th minute effort well saved by John Ruddy in the top corner. Sebastian Bassong should have done better with a header from close range five minutes later, before Bony was back to cause trouble in the 20th minute, dragging his shot just wide of the mark.
City continued to press for the opener, and they were looking good but the Norwich defence was proving to be a real stone wall. Matthew Jarvis had a lovely chance to sneak a Norwich opener just before the half hour mark, but his shot was well saved by Joe Hart.
The Citizens upped the tempo in search of a goal before the break, but their efforts were well dealt with and 0-0 is how the teams headed into the break, despite late efforts from Bony and a close Vincent Kompany header on the stroke of half-time.
Manuel Pellegrini’s charges continued where they had left off after the restart, and Nicolas Otamendi rose to head home a 66th minute effort that rattled the net to give City a deserved 1-0 lead.
The home side continued to dominate play in the second stanza, and Bony came close to extending their lead four minutes later, but the Ivorian failed to navigate his effort accordingly.
The tempo dropped a bit in the closing exchanges, and Cameron Jerome sneaked in to slot the ball past Hart and into the bottom corner to draw Norwich level at 1-1 with less than ten minutes remaining. A few minutes later, Ryan Bennet handled the ball in the area, and was shown a straight red for his efforts with Yaya Toure then slotting home the resulting penalty to hand Manchester City a slim 2-1 victory.
