Result: Manchester City 3-1 Newcastle United

Date: 20 January 2018

Venue Etihad

Manchester City restored their 12-point lead over Manchester United, after defeating Newcastle United 3-1, with Sergio Aguero netting a hat-trick.

After a quiet start, City had the ball in the back of the net in the 18th minute, but Raheem Sterling's strike was flagged offside.

The home side. eventually broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, when Aguero sent a glancing header home at the near post, 1-0.

Four minutes later, Kevin de Bruyne nearly put his name on the score-sheet, but the Belgian's strike was turned away by Karl Darlow.

Newcastle, meanwhile, barely threatened in the opening stanza as goalkeeper Ederson was not tested at all.

The Citizens were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute, when Raheem Sterling was brought down by Javi Manquillo. Aguero took responsibility and made no mistake from the spot to double City's lead, 2-0.

Newcastle pulled a goal back in the 67th minute, as Jacob Murphy showed great composure to lob the Ederson when played through on goal.

However, Aguero sealed the win and his hat-trick in the 83rd minute with a sweeping finish from 12-yards out after some superb work by Leroy Sane.

The win has restored City's 12-point lead over second place Manchester United.
