Manchester City's Premier League title celebrations were put on hold as a brace from Paul Pogba helped Manchester United come from behind to claim a 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola decided to leave the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus on the bench.
As expected, City dominated the possession statistics in the early stages of the encounter and eventually broke the deadlock on 25 minutes when Vincent Kompany out-muscled Chris Smalling to power home a header past David de Gea.
Six minutes later, City doubled their lead as Ilkay Gundogan combined with Raheem Sterling before turning his marker to fire into the bottom corner.
The Red Devils, meanwhile, failed to get the ball off the hosts and struggled to create even one scoring chance in the first half.
However, United pulled a goal back seven minutes into the second half as Ander Herrera played in Pogba, who slotted past Ederson.
The scores were level a minute later as Pogba bagged his second by heading past Ederson after being picked out by Alexis Sanchez.
It got better for United as they took the lead on 69 minutes as an unmarked Smalling turned home Sanchez's free-kick in the six-yard box.
Pep Guardiola responded by introducing De Bruyne, Jesus and Aguero for the final 15 minutes of the half.
City pushed for an equaliser and they were nearly rewarded in the closing stages but De Gea was on hand to deny Aguero, while Sterling struck the upright with a deflected attempt.
In the end, Mourinho's men managed to see off the late surge from City to secure three points at their cross-town rivals.
