Date: 07 May 2017
Venue: Anfield
James Milner missed a second-half penalty as Liverpool were held to 0-0 draw by Southampton at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Jurgen Klopp's charges enjoyed most of the possession in the early stages of the encounter although the Saints defence were organised to deal with any threats.
The first real effort at goal arrived after 34 minutes as Roberto Firmino skipped past James Ward-Prowse before firing at goal, but Fraser Forster was on hand to make the save.
Southampton did see a bit of the ball in the first half, but they failed threaten Simon Mignolet's goal for the entire opening stanza.
That proved to be the trend for the rest of the half, as the sides went into the break all square.
The opening stages of the second half was not any different with both sides struggling to create opportunities.
The Saints made the first change after 60 minutes when Moroccan Sofiane Boufal was replaced by Nathan Redmond.
However, Liverpool were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute when Jack Stephens was adjudged to have handled in the box. James Milner stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by Fraser Forster.
Klopp introduced Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge for the final 20 minutes of the second half as they pushed for an opening goal.
The Reds were camped in Southampton's half for most of the closing stages in the second half, but were unable to bypass the visitors defence.
