English Premier League
Result: Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea
Date: 31 January 2017
Diego Costa missed a second-half penalty, as Chelsea and Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
Senegal star, Sadio Mane returned to the Reds squad, but was only fit enough to make the bench.
Liverpool dominated the opening exchanges, but could only test Thibaut Courtois on one occasion from distance in the opening 20 minutes.
However, Chelsea broke the deadlock after 24 minutes when some quick thinking from David Luiz saw the Brazilian score from a free-kick.
Jurgen Klopp's charges continued to dominate in the first half, but struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities.
The Reds eventually leveled matters 10 minutes into the second half as Georginio Wijnaldum headed home James Milner's knock-back, 1-1.
Antonio Conte made the first change of the match in the 70th minute as he withdrew Eden Hazard for Pedro Rodriguez.
Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 75th minute when Joel Matip brought down Diego Costa, who stepped up and had his spot-kick saved by Simon Mignolet.
Both sides pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages, with Chelsea going the closest through Pedro in the 89th minute.
However, neither side could find the winning goal as Chelsea extended their lead to nine points, after Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur dropped points.
