Firmino & Mane Braces Keep Liverpool Title Hopes Alive
English Premier League
Result: Liverpool 4-2 Burnley
Date: 10 March 2019
Liverpool managed to keep their English Premier League title hopes alive with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over Burnley at Anfield on Sunday.
The result sees the Reds up to 73 points on the league table from 30 matches, a point behind leaders Manchester City who beat Watford 3-1 on Saturday.
It was the worst possible start for Liverpool who went behind after only six minutes after a mistake by goalkeeper Alisson saw him misjudge a corner-kick from Ashley Westwood which curled into the net, 1-0.
The home side took control of the game after that and managed to draw level in the 19th minute when Mohamed Salah worked his way into the box from the right and squared for Roberto Firmino to tap home from close range, 1-1.
Ten minutes later and Liverpool took the lead when Sadio Mane pounced on a loose ball inside the box and epxertly fired into the corner of the net from 14-yards out, 2-1.
The Reds dominated the possession stakes for the remainder of the half but failed to add to the scoreline.
It was more of the same in the second half as Liverpool continued to squander decent goal scoring chances.
Finally, in the 67th minute the home side grabbed their second goal but only after an error from Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton saw him gift the ball to Salah with a poor clearance.
The Egyptian proceeded to drive towards goal and was thwarted in a one-on-one with the keeper, but Firmino was quickest to pounce on the rebound and poked the ball home to make it 3-1.
Burnley tried to findtheir way back into the match after that and they did manage to find a consolation goal courtesy of Johann Gudmundsson in the 91st minnute, but their joy was short-lived when Mane scored his second goal in the dying seconds of the match, 4-2.
