Report: Leicester City 3-1 Arsenal
Date: 09 May 2018
Venue: King Power Stadium
Leicester City handed 10-man Arsenal a 3-1 thumping at the King Power in Wednesday’s Premier League action.
Leicester, who have never tasted victory over the Gunners at home, were looking to do exactly that to end their floundering campaign off on a high.
It was, however, the opposition that came off quickest, with Alex Iwobi’s shot from afar being pushed onto the post by Eldin Jakupovic in the early minutes.
The start seemed to only inspire the Foxes, who took the initiative to get the opener thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho, who slotted home a perfect layoff from Fousseni Diabate on 14 minutes.
The situation got only worse for Arsenal when young defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, who was signed in January, got his marching orders for bringing down goal-scorer Iheanacho as the last man in the 15th minute.
As a result, changes needed to happen and defender Shkodran Mustafi came on for striker Danny Welbeck on 20 minutes.
Jakupović was called into action for the second time as he had to prevent Henrikh Mkhitaryan from finding the equalizer from close range on 33 minutes.
A free-kick from Adrian Silva after 38 minutes had Petr Cech stretching to make a save as the ball went under the wall.
The intensity with which the Foxes ended the first half continued into the second period when Jamie Vardy’s hold-up play brought in Diabate, who was unfortunate to see his effort cleared off the line.
The Gunners also threatened when Mkhitaryan's shot from an acute angle left Jakupović flat-footed as it cannoned off the post.
The north London side eventually found the equaliser on 54 minutes after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang needed two efforts to beat Jakupovic following a supply from Iwobi.
Relentless pressure from Arsenal led to naught, as they went down for the second time in the match. A foul on Damarai Gray in the area led to the awarding of a penalty, which Vardy easily converted with 15 minutes to go.
Algerian Riyad Mahrez rounded off the encounter a minute into added time with a composed finish, where he floored Cech with a dummied shot before finishing msartly into an empty net.
