English Premier League
Result: Everton 1-0 Newcastle United
Date: 23 April 2018
Venue: Goodison Park
Theo Walcott's second-half strike was enough to hand Everton a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at Goodison Park on Monday evening.
The Toffees got off to an encouraging start, with Cenk Tuson firing just wide from 12-yards out after some good work by Walcott.
The visitors, meanwhile, started to see more of the ball after 15 minutes but they struggled to carve out any openings for striker Islam Slimani.
The first big chance of the half arrived after 34 minutes when Micheal Keane's knockdown found Phil Jagielka, who fired over the crossbar from close range.
However, despite Everton's dominance in the remaining 10 minutes, they failed to break the deadlock and went into the break goalless.
Five minutes into the second half, Everton took the lead through Walcott, who collected a cross from Yannick Bolasie before rifling the ball into the roof of the net.
Newcastle were nearly level on 63 minutes when Dwight Gayle peeled off his marker before volleying over the crossbar from eight-yards out.
The Magpies threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser in the remaining stages of the second stanza, but in the end, Everton remained resolute in defence as the hosts secured three points on the night.
