English Premier League
Result: Everton 0-2 Manchester City
Date: 06 February 2019
Venue: Goodison Park
Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League standings with a 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.
Leroy Sane came into the starting line-up for the Citizens, while Kevin de Bruyne dropped to the bench along with Raheem Sterling.
The Citizens dominated the opening exchanges as expected, while the likes of Aymeric Laporte and Sergio Aguero squandered big chances in the opening 20 minutes of the half.
The Toffees, meanwhile, used the ball wisely at times but they didn't have much joy in the final third as City shot-stopper was largely untested.
Everton's resolve eventually broke shortly before the break as Laporte rose well to send a towering header past Jordan Pickford to put City ahead.
With City struggling to breakdown the Everton defence in the second half, Pep Guardiola threw on Sterling for Sane just before the hour mark.
Everton threw on Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison for the 15 minutes of the encounter, and the change nearly paid as the latter played in Cenk Tosun, who was thwarted by Ederson.
However, it was City who got the next goal as De Bruyne sent a fine pass towards Jesus, who managed to get on the scoresheet at the second time of asking after his initial was blocked.
In the end, 2-0 was how the score remained as the Citizens leapfrog Liverpool into top spot due to their superior goal difference.
