English Premier League
Result: Chelsea 1-0 Southampton
Date: 16 December 2017
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Marcos Alonso's first-half strike was enough to hand Chelsea a 1-0 win over Southampton, at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
Antonio Conte's charges dominated in the opening 20 minutes of the encounter and they managed to carve out a couple chances, although Fraser Forster produced a few good saves to deny Eden Hazard and Alonso.
Southampton, meanwhile, struggled to get the ball off the Premier League champions, which led to a lack of chances.
Forster came to Southampton's rescue on 33 minutes, as he produced a fine low save at his near post to deny Alonso.
In the 43rd minute, the Blues went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, as Pedro's deflected effort crashed against the woodwork.
However, Alonso managed to give Chelsea the lead on the stroke of halftime with a well-taken free-kick, 1-0.
After a quiet start to the half, the Saints nearly levelled matters in the 63rd minute but, Charlie Austin's close range strike was turned away by Thibaut Courtois.
Six minutes later, the Blues had the ball in the back of the net again, but Hazard's strike was flagged offside.
Chelsea should have extended their lead in the 78th minute, but Cesc Fabregas' close range effort was brilliantly saved by Forster.
The Blues pushed for a second goal in the closing stages but 1-0 was how the score remained at the full-time whistle.
