English Premier League
Result: Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle United
Date: 19 October 2019
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Chelsea marched into the top four of the Premier League following a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
Ngolo Kante missed out following a groin injury and had his spot taken by Ross Barkley across the midfield of the park, as Frank Lampard made only one change.
Buoyed from the win over Manchester United, the Magpies looked for an early lead but Allan Saint-Maximin volleyed wide from the edge of the area.
Callum Hudson-Odoi turned provider to Willian after 16 minutes with a threading ball into the middle of the area, but the Brazilian nodded wide of the post.
Chelsea maintained pressure four minutes later with Mason Mount forcing the best out of Martin Dubravka following a shot on the turn from point blank range.
Opportunities for either side cropped up before halftime, but neither took the initiative and went to the tunnel logged.
Each side returned unchanged from the break following a hard-slog first half with the context of the match delicately poised for either side.
Tammy Abraham came close to heading the Blues in front 12 minutes from halftime, but his effort from Willian’s corner towered against the crossbar.
Lampard threw in more firepower up front after 64 minutes, as Mount made way for Christian Pulisic.
The change paid dividends on 73 minutes after Marco Alonso smashed into the bottom corner from Abraham’s diagonal delivery.
Abraham appeared to double their tally ten minutes to the end, but his close-range effort was cleared off the line.
That didn’t matter though as the Blues picked up their fifth win in a row to head into the top-four for the first time this season.
