Venue: Stamford Bridge
Olivier Giroud's first-half strike was enough to lead Chelsea to a 1-0 win over Mohamed Salah's Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.
Roberto Firmino almost gave the Reds an early lead with a first-time half-volley in the third minute but Blues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a brilliant save.
Antonio Conte’s charges sat deep in the early stages, looking for opportunities on the counter-attack while the Reds were asking all of the questions.
Sadio Mane had an opportunity for Jurgen Klopp’s troops in the 25th minute with a half-volley, but once again Courtois kept the hosts in the game with a fantastic save.
Giroud eventually broke the deadlock for the Blues in the 33rd minute with their first chance at goal, leaping highest to power through a header following a cross from Victor Moses, 1-0.
Cesc Fabregas had a chance to double the lead for Conte’s men six minutes before the break with a curling strike from a tight angle that sailed narrowly wide.
The Blues were a different side after netting the opener and were causing all sorts of problems for the visitors as they took the 1-0 lead into the break.
The hosts were on the front foot early in the second stanza as Moses and Giroud combined again four minutes from the restart but this time with the Nigerian taking a low shot that was saved by Loris Karius.
Eden Hazard almost doubled the lead for the Blues three minutes before the hour mark as he weaved his way into the box and unleashing a low strike that was turned away by Karius.
Conte’s men started sitting deep with 20 minutes to go but were getting the better chances on the break as the Reds could not translate their possession into shots at goal.
The Blues went close to extending their lead with 10 minutes remaining, but Marcos Alonso saw his powerful effort sail inches wide of the upright.
The hosts threw on Davide Zappacosta for Moses, while Jurgen Klopp responded by introducing Alberto Moreno for James Milner.
Nevertheless, Chelsea managed to see out the remaining stages of the second half to claim three points.
The Blues remain in fifth spot, but are now one point behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur, who lost to West Brom on Saturday.
