Newcastle Claim Third Straight League Win

English Premier League

Result: Burnley 1-2 Newcastle United

Date: 26 November 2018

Venue: Turf Moor

Newcastle United made it three wins on the spin after defeating Burnley 2-1 in the English Premier League on Monday evening.

Following a 30-minute delay, the match finally went ahead after the referee’s assessor Eddie Wolstenholme collapsed in the stadium tunnel.

A touch of fortune swung for the Magpies when Ben Mee deflected a curler from outside the box by Federico Fernandez past Joe Hart for the opener on four minutes.

In need of points, Newcastle aimed to build on their two-match winning run before the FIFA break to brighten up their thus far damning campaign.

After claiming possession in midfield, Chris Wood turned his marker to have a go at Martin Dubravka but it was easily waved aside by the keeper.

It was two after the midway stage after glancing header from Ciaran Clark crept into the bottom corner following an inverted cross.

The Magpies were now well and truly in control of both defence and attack, with the hosts seeing little direction in these two facets.

It would change five minutes to halftime when Sam Vokes connected with a cross-field ball to send in a pinpoint header past Dubravka.

Clear connection between Vokes and Wood led the latter to produce an acrobatic save from Dubravka following a stunning left-footed volley in additional time.

An unexpected miss from Matt Ritchie from an open net following a low cross saw Newcastle miss the opportunity to go further in front and taken total control of proceedings.

Another link-up between Vokes and Wood came to the party, with the former laying off a long ball to Wood who made no qualms with a first-time shot from close range.

Wood was in the thick of things again when he ran onto a loose ball from a free-kick to take a snap shot, but Dubravka rushed off his line to narrow the angle and save for a corner.

The Tyneside outfit could’ve made it three inside the final minutes, but Joselu’s attempt from inside the box after getting behind the defence struck the post.

In closing out, the Clarets searched for an equaliser, but it was the visitors who left smiling with their third win on the bounce to move to 14th spot ahead of Huddersfield Town.
