Newcastle United's three-game winning run came to an end after they lost 1-0 to newly promoted Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.
Brighton made a bright start in the opening minutes of the encounter bombing forward with pace.
The Magpies absorbed the pressure and Joselu could have opened the scoring in the 22nd minute missing a sitter inside the box following a break attack.
Rafa Benitez's charges grew in the match and started to dominate from the half-an-hour mark up to the first half break, although they could not capitalise on the chances they created and the first half ended goalless.
Tomer Hemed broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 51st minute with a neat flick at the far post following a good free-kick routine, 1-0.
The visitors started to resort to long range shots after the hour-mark with Brighton's defence very tight at the back.
After 75 minutes Benitez's charges had gained momentum in the second half and were threatening to score particularly on set-pieces.
Jonjo Shelvey was unlucky to hit the woodwork directly from a corner in the 86th minute as United were desperately pressing for an equaliser.
In the end, Brighton's stayed resolute to see out the win to move up to 13th spot, while the Magpies remain in ninth spot.
