Manchester United were left stunned after suffering a 1-0 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Friday evening.
The Red Devils were without the services Romelu Lukaku, who is injured, while Alexis Sanchez was rested by Jose Mourinho.
Marouane Fellaini thought he had opened the scoring in the fourth minute for United after netting at the far post but he was adjudged to have been offside.
Glenn Murray almost sensationally grabbed the lead for the Seagulls in the 19th minute after unleashing a half-volley from 25-yards out, but United goalkeeper David De Gea produced a great save.
Ten minutes later, Jose Izquierdo also unleashed a thunderbolt on a volley from distance, but once more De Gea tipped his strike over the bar.
The match went into the break goalless but the Seagulls showed more hunger and determination to win the match, while United could not get going in the last third of the field.
Paul Pogba nearly broke the deadlock for the Red Devils four minutes after the break with a sneaky low shot at the near post, but goalkeeper Mathew Ryan was well alert and made the save.
Gross finally got the breakthrough for Albion three minutes before the hour with a looping header inside the box that was adjudged to have crossed the line by goal-line technology.
Anthony Martial tried his luck from range for Jose Mourinho’s charges with a volleyed strike 10 minutes from time, but his effort sailed over the bar as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.
United showed their frustration with long-range strikes, none of which could trouble Albion shot-stopper Ryan.
With four minutes remaining, Jesse Lingard should have got the equaliser for the Red Devils after going clear in the middle of the box but he fired wide and Brighton held on for the win, which secured another season of top-flight football.
