Stoke Drop Points At Brighton
English Premier League
Result: Brighton & Hove Albion 2-2 Stoke City
Date: 20 November 2017
Venue: The American Express Community Stadium
Brighton and Hove Albion and Stoke City played to an entertaining 2-2 draw at the AMEX in a Monday night Premier League thriller.
Mathew Ryan was the first goalkeeper to be seriously tested as he tipped a Ryan Shawcross header over the bar in the 12th minute after the Stoke captain met Darren Fletcher’s cross.
Nevertheless, Brighton enjoyed the lion’s share of early possession and went close to capitalising in the 18th minute. José Izquierdo was afforded plenty of space to cut inside from the left and shoot, but couldn’t quite get enough curl on the ball to slot it in at the far post.
However, it was Stoke who drew first blood in the 28th minute. Xherdan Shaqiri picked out Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting with an inch-perfect long ball and the Cameroonian striker controlled it with an exquisite first touch before firing home.
38 minutes in, Shawcross was fortunate not to concede a penalty as he caught Glenn Murray with a reckless sliding tackle in the box. The home crowd was left incensed by Lee Mason’s decision not to award a spot-kick.
Brighton finally got the equaliser they deserved in the 44th minute. Davy Pröpper dribbled past several players before putting in a cross from the right, which Pascal Groß turned home with his first touch.
There was to be another twist before half-time as Stoke regained the lead in stoppage time. Brighton failed to deal with the first ball in from a corner and Kurt Zouma nodded home following a scramble in the box.
Brighton’s defensive woes continued early in the second half as Pröpper’s giveaway led to a chance for Stoke in the 50th minute. Ramadan Sobhi played a one-two off Joe Allen before forcing a strong save from Ryan.
However, 10 minutes later, the hosts caught a lucky break at the other end. Izquierdo’s cross deflected back into his path off Kevin Wimmer and he took full advantage, slotting in the equaliser.
Shaqiri went fairly close to restoring Stoke’s advantage in the 68th minute, but his long-range drive went wide of the post.
Try as they might, neither side could find a late winner. Brighton stayed ninth on the log, while 15th-placed Stoke moved four points clear of the relegation zone.
