Result: Bournemouth 2-2 Chelsea
Date: 29 February 2020
Venue: Vicarage Road
Chelsea once again missed the chance to cement fourth spot in the Premier League with a 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday evening.
The Blues started with just two changes from Tuesday’s defeat to Bayern Munich, as Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount replaced Antonio Rudiger and Ross Barkley respectively.
The Cherries made a bright start in the first three minutes after Philip Billing latched on to a cut back from Jack Stacey before seeing his attempt saved by Willy Caballero.
Mount soon managed to get the visitors going with a dipping attempt from an awkward bounce ahead of Aaron Ramsdale, who palmed the effort around the post.
The Blues hit the front 33 minutes in after Marco Alonso got over a bounce inside the left channel to find the top corner after Olivier Giroud’s initial attempt cracked the crossbar.
Bournemouth went level 10 minutes after the halftime break when Jefferson Lerma reacted quickly to a corner kick to head home from a corner.
King spearheaded the comeback 58 minutes in with a simple tap-in after poor timing from Caballero, who failed to gather a low cross from the right, with the Video Assistant Referee approving.
Frank Lampard rang the changes as Giroud made way for Michy Batshuayi on 72 minutes, as the Blues looked for more mobility.
Batshuayi had the ball in the net a minute after coming on with a fine strike off Alonso’s pass, but the effort was disallowed for offside.
Bournemouth’s resistance finally seized when Ramsdale palmed Pedro’s low shot straight to Alonso who headed home the rebound five minutes from time as the two sides settled for a share of the spoils.
