Result: Arsenal 2-1 Southampton
Date: 10 September 2016
Venue: Emirates Stadium
A late penalty rescued maximum points for Arsenal in their slender 2-1 victory over Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Southampton enjoyed a bit more of the possession in the opening few minutes of the clash, and Dusan Tadic produced a beauty of a free-kick in the 17th minute. Tadic’s effort forced a fingertip save from Petr Cech in the top corner, but the ball bounced off the crossbar, onto the keeper’s back and straight into the back of the net to hand the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
The hosts then upped the tempo, and had a few half-chances created without getting any real chance on goal. The Gunners were finally rewarded in the 28th minute as captain, Laurent Koscielny produced a superb overhead kick to pull one back for the hosts, levelling matters at 1-1.
Arsenal continued to push for another goal, but the visiting outfit were determined to head into the break tied at 1-1, and so it was.
The Arsenal started the second stanza on a more threatening note, with chances falling to Theo Walcott and then Hector Bellerin, the latter coming quite close with his 60th minute effort that went agonisingly close.
In the 63rd it was Nacho Monreal’s turn to have a go at goal, also coming close, and then substitute Alexis Sanchez began asking serious questions of the Southampton defense.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg almost sneaked one in for the visitors as he forced a good save in the bottom corner, but Cech was equal to the task with only seven minutes of regular time left to play.
Jose Fonte presented the Gunners with an opportunity to win it by conceding a penalty right on the stroke of full-time after the defender brought down Olivier Giroud in the area.
Santi Cazorla made no mistake from the spot as he sealed the 2-1 victory, ensuring Arsenal walk away with maximum points from the encounter.
