English Premier League
Result: Arsenal 3-2 Southampton
Date: 08 April 2018
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Danny Welbeck bagged a brace and an assist to inspire Arsenal to a 3-2 win over Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Saints went close to breaking the deadlock after seven minute when James Ward-Prowse saw his effort cleared off the line by Mustafi.
Southampton were not to be denied on 16 minutes when Shane Long got in-front of his marker to poke the ball beyond Mustafi.
The hosts eventually leveled matters thanks to a strike from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, his sixth goal in the Premier League since joining from Borussia Dortmund in January.
In the 38th minute, Arsenal went in front as Welbeck found space on the edge of the box and fired a deflected effort past Alex McCarthy.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Saints nearly pulled themselves level through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who forced Petr Cech into a fine save with a low strike from the edge of the box.
Southampton had the ball in the back of the net on 63 minutes but Long's first-time finish was flagged for offside.
Substitute Charlie Austin did bring the visitors level on 73 minutes by turning home Cedric Soares' low cross with a neat finish.
However, Welbeck secured the win for the Gunners with 10 minutes remaining as he headed home Alexi Iwobi's cross at the far post.
The game ended on a sour note when both teams had players sent off, as Jack Stephens and Mohamed Elneny were given straight red cards for off-the-ball incidents.
