Ozil Stunner Hands Arsenal Slender Win Over Newcastle

English Premier League

Full Time: Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle United

Date: 16 December 2017

Venue: Emirates Stadium

A first-half goal from Mesut Ozil, handed Arsenal a slender 1-0 win over Newcastle United, in an English Premier League match at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The Gunners started well and nearly took the lead in the eighth minute, after Hector Bellerin worked his way into the box, but saw his effort cleared off the goalline by a Newcastle defender.

Arsenal continued to push forward and took the lead in the 23rd minute, when Ozil found himself in space 16-yards out and showed good composure to find the back of the net with a well-struck shot, 1-0.

It was nearly two for Arsenal and Ozil in the 38th minute, when he beat two defenders with his silky click skills, before seeing his thunderous 18-yard effort brilliantly saved by Rob Elliot.

It was 1-0 to Arsenal at half time.

Newcastle came into the second half a rejuvenated side and almost levelled matters ten minutes after the restart, when Jacob Murphy unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box, but he was superbly denied by an acrobatic Petr Cech.

In the 66th minute Alex Iwobi had the perfect opportunity to double Arsenal’s lead, when he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but he was magnificently thwarted by Elliot.

Ten minutes later, Eilliot was at his best yet again, this time denying Jack Wilshere from point blank range, with an amazing save after the Arsenal man latched onto a right-wing cross.

Newcastle threw players forward in the dying minutes of the game, but the Arsenal defence stood firm as they picked up the win and another three points in the league.
