Arsenal Down Chelsea To Boost Top Four Hopes
English Premier League
Result: Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea
Date: 19 January 2019
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Arsenal kept their top four hopes alive in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over London rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday night,
Mesut Ozil returned to the squad but was only named on the bench, while Maurizio Sarri deployed Eden Hazard in the false nine role once again.
The Gunners came out firing in the first half and they were rewarded in the 13th minute with Alexandre Lacazette firing home from a tight angle.
The Blues pushed for a way back into the encounter, but they were often thwarted by the Gunners defence, who welcomed back Laurent Koscielny.
Koscielny then had a say at the other end when he converted a cross from Sokratis Papastathopoulos to double the Gunners' lead on 39 minutes.
Chelsea went close to pulling a goal back minutes later when Marcos Alonso rattled the upright with a towering header.
After a quiet start to the second half, Sarri withdrew Mateo Kovacic and Willian for Ross Barkley and former Arsenal star Olivier Giroud.
The Gunners were forced into a change with 20 minutes remaining as defender Hector Bellerin went down clutching his knee before he was stretchered off and replaced by Mohammed Elneny.
Despite the injury set-back, Unai Emery's troops continued to threaten as they went in search of a third goal while the Blues seemingly ran out steam.
In the end, the hosts were able to see out the closing stages with relative ease to claim a clean sheet and three points, which sees them move three points behind Chelsea in fifth.
