English Premier League
Result: Arsenal 2-1 Everton
Date: 24 October 2015
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Arsenal took over top spot in the English Premier League on Saturday with a 2-1 win against Everton.
Olivier Giroud had a great chance in the eighth minute to give the hosts the early lead when Santi Cazorla's cross found the Frenchman at the near post, but he sent his headed effort wide of the target.
The striker made up for his earlier miss by breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute. Mesut Ozil got the ball on the left wing and curled a superb cross towards Giroud who scored with a headed effort from close range.
The Gunners doubled their lead in the 38th minute. Alexis Sanchez won a free kick for the hosts on the left flank and Cazorla sent a cross in towards the edge of the six-yard box where Laurent Koscielny beat Tim Howard to the ball to head home.
A minute before the break the Toffees were back in the clash as Ross Barkley pulled one back for the away side. A counter-attack resulted in Barkley unleashing a long-range shot that deflected off Gabriel and into the back of the net.
Two minutes into the second half Sanchez had a great chance to restore the two-goal lead. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's pass beat Stones and found the Chilean but his attempt was blocked by Seamus Coleman.
Sanchez had another top chance when Oxlade-Chamberlain surged forward again and set up his team-mate, but Howard smothered the ball just in time.
Everton came agonisingly close to levelling matters in the 79th minute but Romelu Lukaku headed his effort into the woodwork instead.
Gareth Barry earned a second yellow card in stoppage time to bring an end to Everton's frustrating day on the pitch.
