Bale Winner Sends Spurs Up To Second

English Premier League

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

Date: 01 November 2020

Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham Hotspur climbed up to second in the Premier League after beating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 courtesy of a late goal by Gareth Bale on Sunday evening.

Spurs manager Jose Mourinho brought back his regulars, with only goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Sergio Reguilon keeping their places from their UEFA Europa Europa league defeat.

The hosts had a bright start and were awarded a penalty in the 11th minute by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after Adam Lallana leaped on top of Harry Kane around the 18-yard line. Kane stepped up himself and fired a powerful strike past Robert Sanchez to give the Lilywhites the lead.

Brighton were working their way back into the game and they had a penalty appeal in the 24th minute after Matt Doherty pulled Leandro Trossard inside the box, preventing him from getting to the end of a through ball but the referee waved away their appeals.

The sides were cancelling each other out in the closing phase of the first stanza and Mourinho's charges went to the break leading by an odd goal.

Taariq Lamptey eventually levelled matters for Brighton 11 minutes after  the break with a low strike on the blind-side of the box that found the bottom corner but there was controversy surrounding the goal for a disputed foul by Solly March on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the build-up that the referee checked on the VAR monitor but he stood with his on-field decision.

Erik Lamela came close to restoring the lead for Spurs in the 68th minute with a cracking strike from the edge of the box that came off the bottom post while Kane squandered a good chance two minutes later.

However, Bale finally restored the lead for Spurs just after coming on in the 73rd minute with a header at the near post from Reguilon's cross.

The Lilywhites were able to see out the closing stages to claim three points, which sees Mourinho's men move up to second on the log, just two points behind leaders Liverpool.
