English Premier League
Full Time: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool
Date: 22 February 2015
Venue: St. Mary’s Stadium
Liverpool moved up to sixth in the English Premier League with a 2-0 win over Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium on Sunday evening.
The win sees the Reds up to 45 points, now only a point behind Southampton in fifth place.
It was the perfect start to the game for Liverpool who opened the scoring after only three minutes thanks to a spectacular long range striker from Philippe Coutinho which found the top left-hand corner, 1-0.
Southampton should have been awarded a penalty a minute later when Joe Allen pulled down Filip Djuricic inside the box, but the referee waved away the appeals, wrongly so.
Liverpool had a penalty shout of their own on the half hour mark when Raheem Sterling appeared to have been fouled inside the box by Jose Fonte, but again the referee said no.
Chances on goal were few and far between in the opening half as both teams defended stoutly in rainy conditions.
The half ended 1-0 in favour of the visitors.
Southampton started the second half the better of the two teams and came close to drawing level five minutes after the restart, but Graziano Pelle pulled his 24-yard shot inches wide of the target.
On the hour mark Sadio Mane showed great control to bring the ball down inside the Liverpool box, but saw his ten-yard shot blocked on the line by Martin Skrtel.
Southampton continued to press forward, but were caught on the counter-attack in the 74th minute when a swift break out from Liverpool concluded with Sterling driving the ball home from 14-yards out, 2-0.
The home side tried to find their way back into the game, but the Liverpool defence held firm as they secured their 13th win of the league season.
