English Premier League
Full Time: Manchester United 2-0 Sunderland
Date: 28 February 2015
Venue: Old Trafford
A second half brace from Wayne Rooney handed Manchester United a 2-0 win over Sunderland in an English Premier League match at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The win, the Red Devils’ 14th of the league season, takes them into third place on the log with 50 points, two points above Arsenal who only play on Sunday against Everton.
The loss for Sunderland sees them drop to 16th on the league table on 25 points, only three points outside of the relegation zone.
United started positively and could have taken the lead in the fifth minute when Rooney met a corner-kick, but he headed wide under no pressure.
In the 12th minute Ashley Young came close to scoring for the home side when he flashed a shot from the edge of the box inches over the crossbar.
Ten minutes later Young was in the thick of the action again when he saw a 16-yard volley deflect off a Sunderland defender onto the crossbar.
United continued to dominate the remainder of the half, but could not find a break through before the break.
The Red Devils continued in the same vein in the second half and were finally rewarded for their efforts when the referee pointed to the penalty spot following a foul on Radamel Falcao inside the box.
The man to give away the penalty in the 63rd minute was Wes Brown and he was shown a red card for his tackle.
Rooney stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to give United the lead, 1-0.
Rooney made certain of the points for the home side in the 84th minute after the keeper spilt a shot from Adnan Januzaj and the England striker was there to poke home, 2-0.
