Burnley Hold Ten Man Chelsea

English Premier League

Full Time:  Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

Date: 21 February 2015

Venue: Stamford Bridge

A goal ten minutes from time courtesy of Ben Mee saw Burnley hold a ten man Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in an English Premier League match at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The draw, which is Chelsea’s sixth of the season, sees the London-based club extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points ahead of Manchester City’s game against Newcastle United on Saturday night.

The point for Burnley sees them continue to struggle in the relegation zone, second from bottom with 22 points, five above bottom placed Leicester City who play Everton on Sunday.

Chelsea started positively and opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Branislav Ivanovic side-footed home a low cross from Eden Hazard.

The home team continued to dominate the opening half, but struggled to fashion decent chances in front of goal due to a stubborn Burnley defence.

Chelsea, though, did have two good penalty appeals turned down.

In the 33rd minute a shot from Ivanovic struck the hand of Michael Knightly inside the box, but the referee waved away the penalty appeals.

A minute before the break the referee waved away penalty appeals for the second time after Diego Costa had clearly been fouled by Jason Shackell inside the box.

The start of the second half saw Burnley start brightly and only a good save from Thibaut Courtis kept Chelsea in the lead as he turned an effort from Ashley Barnes around the corner with his fingertips.

Six minutes later Costa came within inches of doubling his side’s lead when he met an Ivanovic cross with a toe poke, but it skimmed the wrong side of the post.

Chelsea suffered a set-back in the 70th minute when they were reduced to ten men following retaliation from Nemanja Matic which saw him knee Barnes after a tackle from the Burnley player.

Burnley made the most of the one man advantage and drew level in the 81st minute when Mee headed home a corner-kick for a share of the spoils, 1-1.
