English Championship Play-Off
Result: Aston Villa 0-1 Fulham
Date: 26 May 2018
Venue: Wembley Stadium
The third Championship side to secure promotion to the English Premier League has now been revealed, following Saturday's play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
Fulham will now join Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cardiff City in the top flight next season after the Cottagers defeated Aston Villa 1-0 in the final this weekend.
Fulham dominated the early exchanges at Wembley, moving the ball around the pitch well, although chances were hard to come by.
However, it was no surprise when the Londoners opened the scoring in the 24th minute through skipper Tom Cairney, who expertly finished on the right side of the box after being sent through, 0-1.
Villa, meanwhile, were struggling to get going, particularly in the last third and looked prone to conceding another goal.
Jack Grealish had a chance to level matters for Steve Bruce’s troops six minutes before the break with a volleyed strike from just outside the box, but his shot sailed over the bar as Villa went into the break trailing.
The Villans were a much better side in the early stages of the second stanza, showing a sense of urgency as they pushed for an equaliser.
John Terry came close to leveling for Villa in the 63rd minute with a glancing header inside the box that sailed narrowly wide of the target.
The Cottagers were down to 10 men with 20 minutes to go as defender Denis Odoi was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a late tackle on Grealish.
Despite the numerical advantage, Bruce's charges struggled to carve out chances as the second half drew to a close.
In the end, the London outfit managed to see out the rest of the clash to secure their spot in the Premier League.
