Mosimane heavily rotated the side that was held to a goalless draw by El Gaish on Wednesday, as only goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, Mohamed Hany, Mohamed Abdelmonem and Mohamed Magdy Afsha retained their places, while Percy Tau was among those who dropped to the bench.
The Red Devils had a good chance to grab an early lead after Mohamed Sherif connected well with Taher Mohamed's cross in the box but his header missed the top corner by a whisker.
Ceramica were played on a counter-attack and Mohamed Ibrahim had their best chance in the 26th minute after a lofted cross by Sherif Dabo but he guided his free header wide.
However, chances were few and far between in the latter phase of the first stanza, as Al Ahly were forced to make a change at the back after Abdelmonem got injured and he was replaced by Yasser Ibrahim.
Mosimane eventually brought on Tau at half-time in place of Salah Mohsen, in a straight swap upfront and the South African forward made an immediate impression, as the visitors created chances but they lacked the killer-instinct in front of goal.
Al Ahly continued to apply the pressure and Sherif came close to breaking the deadlock 22 minutes before time with a header in the box that dragged just wide after a cross by Mohamed Hany.
Mosimane made a double change in the last quarter of an hour, as Mohamed Mahmoud replaced Sherif for tactical reasons and Karim Fouad came on for Mohamed Hany at the back.
Al Ahly were creating chance after chance and they were made to pay for missed opportunities, as Basem Morsy eventually broke the deadlock for Ceramica two minutes before time with a strike into the bottom corner after a cross by Mohamed Ibrahim.
The Red Devils had a chance to salvage a point after they were awarded a penalty following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review deep in stoppage time after Mahmoud was fouled in the box.
Magdy Afsha converted the spot-kick for Al Ahly, as they reduced the deficit behind leaders Zamalek to five points in second place on the log, with two matches in hand.
