Jose Mourinho's comments about a particular Premier League team has seemingly backfired, with a player revealing that the Portuguese tactician's remarks inspired them to beat Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend.
Since he arrived on the scene as a head coach, Mourinho has gained a reputation for controversial pre-match and post-match comments about his opposition and sometimes even his own players.
With Spurs' having lost 2-1 to West Ham United on Sunday, it appears that previous remarks the Portuguese had made about the Hammers was what inspired David Moyes' side to victory, as has been claimed by midfielder Declan Rice.
"I read during the week that Mourinho said that, at the end of the season, there would be no comparison between where Spurs are going to be compared to West Ham and that they were going to overtake us," the England international told talkSPORT.
"You read stuff like that as players – I think he said it on the Spurs YouTube channel – you read that as players and you think, 'Yeah that is going to make me go out there and prove you wrong'.
"You go out there and you want to put out an even better performance, so I think all the lads knew that. We wanted to go out there yesterday and really beat Spurs."
Spurs have now lost five of their past six Premier League matches, which sees the London club in ninth spot on the table.
