Eden Hazard and Willian returned to the Chelsea side, as they defeated Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon 5-4 on penalties in the International Champions Cup.

A positive opening from the hosts invited Ruben Loftus-Cheek the ascendancy to edge forward, combined with Willian before being denied by Anthony Lopez.

Lyon tried getting ahead from a corner, but sturdy Blues defending prevented any chance for Mariano Diaz heading them in front were wide on 16 minutes.

The pressure continued from the visitors, and good work from Diaz set up Lucas Tousart but the latter volleyed wide on 32 minutes.

Chelsea added their own fuel, as Houssem Aouar shot screwed narrowly pass the far post five minutes later.

In added time, captain on the evening Willian let loose with a curling effort at Lopez, who matched the shot with a strong fist for a corner to keep the scores level-pegging at the break.

The start of the second half got off in a pretty lukewarm manner on either end, as the Blues warmed up World Cup winner Ngolo Kante for the playing personnel.

Loftus-Cheek found the best chance for the hosts when going one-on-one with Lopez after beating his marker, but attempts to dink the goalkeeper saw the ball coming off the post on 55 minutes.

A minute later, Tammy Abraham- one of many touted for a bright future at the club, rose high to pluck out Davide Zappacosta’s far-post cross,  but he was unable to nod on target.

With 13 minutes to go, Eden Hazard’s free-kick was headed back across goal towards Ross Barkley but the latter’s effort was blocked away.

After a goalless regulation period, penalties was to separate the contest. The opening four sequences were effectively converted until Rob Green saved one, leaving Hazard to convert the winner for a 5-4 win.
