Chelsea Fine Goalkeeper For Substitution Row With Sarri

It has been confirmed that Chelsea have taken action against record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga, fining him for his refusal to be substituted by Maurizio Sarri in the Blues' Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

Chelsea Goalkeeper Comments On Refusing To Be Subbed

Fans were shocked at the events that unfolded late on in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, when Arrizabalaga very visibly ignored his manager's instructions.

With a minute of extra-time left, Sarri attempted to replace the 24-year-old with Willy Caballero, but this was met with resistance and fight from the former Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper.

Both Sarri and the goalkeeper later claimed it was all a misunderstanding, with the manager insisting he was under the impression Arrizabalaga was injured.

On Tuesday, though, Chelsea announced via their website that the player has been fined a week's wages, which will be donated to the club's foundation.

Following the announcement, Sarri released a statement of his own, admitting it is a shame this incident overshadowed his team's performance against the Citizens.

"He has apologised to me, his teammates and the club," the Italian said, according to Chelsea's official website.

"It is up to the club if they want to discipline him according to the club rules, but for me this matter is now closed.

"There was a misunderstanding yesterday (Sunday) but he realises he made a big mistake in the way he reacted.

"The team performance as a whole was extremely positive and it is a shame to see how this incident has overshadowed our efforts in what was a very competitive cup final."
