Benni Among 49 Strikers EPL Club Spent £223m On

Former Bafana Bafana star Benni McCarthy is among the 49 strikers a certain Premier League club has spent £223 million (R4 billion) on since 2010, with South Africa's only UEFA Champions League winner being described a "big-name disappointment".

David Gold and David Sullivan completed their takeover of the Hammers in 2010, and have since spent £223 million on 49 strikers, McCarthy among them, per the Daily Mail.

The ex-Bafana forward joined West Ham in the January transfer window 11 years ago, but his relationship with the club's hierarchy reportedly soured soon after his arrival. McCarthy left the London side less than three months later without scoring a single goal, with the English publication going as far as to call him a "big-name disappointment".

According to Transfermarkt, the South African legend made 14 appearances for the Hammers during his short spell, and also featured five times for the club's U23 side, for whom he scored three goals.

McCarthy is among those on a long list of strikers who were bought by the club over the past decade and a bit and struggled to make the position their own. Mido, Simone Zaza and Victor Obinna are also on the list the Daily Mail recently published.

Some of those forwards, however, impressed for the Hammers, such as Demba Ba, whose stay in London lasted just half a season. The Senegalese striker was lured to the club in January 2011 and scored seven goals in 12 matches, but his strikes were not enough to save the club from relegation.

Former Black Aces and FC Cape Town striker Emmanuel Emenike also features on the list, as do Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic, who struck 17 and 22 goals for the club, respectively.

Unfortunately, McCarthy's record of zero goals for West Ham makes him one of the 21 strikers bought by the club since 2010 who failed to find the back of the net at all – you can see them all in the gallery above.

Although he did not arrive with a pedigree, Michail Antonio has seemingly been a breath of fresh air for fans of the club, having scored 42 times and assisted a further 22 strikes in 165 appearances for the Hammers to date.

Klopp Hits Out At Man Utd Tactics

His recent return from injury appears to have had a positive effect on the team, especially in the wake of Sebastien Haller's struggles up front. The Frenchman scored only 14 times in his 53 matches for West Ham before making a permanent switch to Ajax Amsterdam in this transfer window.
