Arsene Wenger On Rumours FC Barcelona Could Play In The Premier League
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has commented on rumours that FC Barcelona could make a shock switch to the Premier League if they are axed from La Liga.
The Spanish league leaders were forced to play on Sunday, despite the disturbances in the city during the Catalan independence vote, which saw Spanish police clash with Catalan representatives.
Catalonia's minister of sport, Gerard Figueras, had indicated last week that FC Barcelona and the other Catalan teams, such as Espanyol and Girona, could opt to play in neighboring countries and potentially even the Premier League if Catalonia gains independence and its clubs are banned from La Liga.
Wenger has now commented on the unlikely scenario.
"I'd try to learn Catalan," he said, as quoted by Marca.
"If Barcelona want to join the Premier League, it makes things even more difficult for everybody.
"But I don't think they have gotten as far as that.
"It is interesting and there will be incidents on the sporting side as Barcelona are a highly political club."
When asked whether or not he would welcome Barcelona to England, Wenger insisted Scottish clubs should be given a priority first.
"I think it will be interesting to see how they respond in the championship," he added.
"We have enough clubs here with 20, but if you want to go up to 24, we have to invite the Scottish clubs before we go for the Spanish."
Barcelona have started the 2017/18 campaign with seven wins from their first seven games, but it remains to be seen what consequences the Catalan independence vote will have.
