Los Blancos were defeated 4-2 after extra-time by cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday. It was Real’s first defeat in an international final since 2000, with Julen Lopetegui’s stint getting off to a bad start.
Reports suggest that club president Florentino Perez could now once again dive into the transfer market in order to improve the squad after the high-profile departure of Ronaldo and the somewhat unexpected defeat.
The Daily Star claim Los Blancos are looking to reinforce their defence and have identified Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso as potential target. The 27-year-old joined Chelsea in 2016 and has since made 83 appearances for the Premier League club, scoring 14 goals and assisting another eight.
Real, meanwhile, have lost left-back back-up Theo Hernandez after the 20-year-old, who was not able to live up to expectations at Santiago Bernabeu, joined Real Sociedad on loan.
Lopetegui is believed to have expressed his desire to add another defender, as well as a striker, to his squad and Alonso, who can also play centre-back, would fit the bill.

The left-back is already the fourth Chelsea star linked with Los Blancos this window after Thibaut Courtois, who joined the club last week, Eden Hazard and Willian, with the latter expected to stay at Stamford Bridge.
